“Traveler’s diarrhea” is a syndrome that occurs in individuals when traveling across countries with precarious or non-optimal sanitary conditions and caused by drinking water or eating foods contaminated by bacteria, viruses, or parasites.

According to the Italian National Institute of Health (ISS), 20 to 30% of travelers are affected by diarrhea every year (around 10 million individuals). Typically, the disease symptoms appear within the first week, but it can also after the trip itself or towards the end of it.

Traveler’s diarrhea symptoms

  • Sometimes, bowel movements are accompanied by vomiting, abdominal pain or cramps, and fever

  • Normally, symptoms subside within 2-3 days and the disorder itself clears within 5 days.
It can on occasion last longer, typically between 7-10 days.
